ABSTRACT: The waste in the fruit production chain, including the juice and pulp industries, produces large quantities of leftover husks, seeds and bagasse. This volume of waste generates huge environmental and economic impact. The objective of this research was to determine the potential of using residues from passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) and apple (Malus domestica) varieties in the production of functional flours. Passion fruit flour showed greater reduction of DPPH (EC50%: 50.4μg/mL) radicals, showing antioxidant potential, as well as a more efficient inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus (71.3±1.2μg/mL), with a modest; however efficient, inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (10%). All Apple flours were good antioxidants and the fuji apple flour stood...

Photochemistry and photobiology of actinic erythema: defensive and reparative cutaneous mechanisms BJMBR
Sunlight is part of our everyday life and most people accept it as beneficial to our health. With the advance of our knowledge in cutaneous photochemistry, photobiology and photomedicine over the past four decades, the terrestrial solar radiation has become a concern of dermatologists and is considered to be a major damaging environmental factor for our skin. Most photobiological effects (e.g., sunburn, suntanning, local and systemic immunosuppression, photoaging or dermatoheliosis, skin cancer and precancer, etc.) are attributed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and more particularly to UVB radiation (290-320 nm). UVA radiation (320-400 nm) also plays an important role in the induction of erythema by the photosensitized generation of reactive oxygen species...

Plant Polyphenol Antioxidants and Oxidative Stress Biol. Res.
URQUIAGA,INES; LEIGHTON,FEDERICO.
In recent years there has been a remarkable increment in scientific articles dealing with oxidative stress. Several reasons justify this trend: knowledge about reactive oxygen and nitrogen species metabolism; definition of markers for oxidative damage; evidence linking chronic diseases and oxidative stress; identification of flavonoids and other dietary polyphenol antioxidants present in plant foods as bioactive molecules; and data supporting the idea that health benefits associated with fruits, vegetables and red wine in the diet are probably linked to the polyphenol antioxidants they contain. In this review we examine some of the evidence linking chronic diseases and oxidative stress, the distribution and basic structure of plant polyphenol antioxidants,...

Nejad,Khojasteh Hoseiny; Sarkaki,Alireza; Dianat,Mahin; Farbood,Yaghoob; Badavi,Mohammad; Gharib-Naseri,Mohammad Kazem.
ABSTRACT Cerebral ischemia commonly occurs when the blood flow to the entire brain or some part of the brain is disrupted. Global cerebral ischemia attenuates the nucleus tractus solitaries (NTS) EEG rhythm, increases the free radicals production and brain inflammation. Ellagic acid (EA) has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects against neural damages. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ellagic acid on EEG power in the global cerebral ischemia.Rats were divided into four groups: SO (sham) received normal saline, EA+SO, I/R (normal saline + ischemia/reperfusion), and EA + I/R. EA (100 mg/kg, dissolved in normal saline) or normal saline was administered orally (gavage) for 10 days. Animal underwent to 20 minutes of ischemia followed by...

Magnani,Marciane; Castro-Gomez,Raul Jorge Hernan; Mori,Mateus Prates; Kuasne,Hellen; Gregório,Emerson Pereira; Libos Jr,Farid; Cólus,Ilce Mara de Syllos.
Carboxymethyl-glucan (CM-G) is a soluble derivative from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1 → 3)(1 → 6)-β-D-glucan. The protective efficiency of CM-G against DNA damage in cells from patients with advanced prostate cancer (PCa), and undergoing Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT), was evaluated. DNA damage scores were obtained by the comet assay, both before and after treatment with CM-G. The reduction in DNA damage, ranging from 18% to 87%, with an average of 59%, was not related to the increased number of leukocytes in peripheral blood. The results demonstrate for the first time the protective effect of CM-G against DNA damage in patients with advanced PCa. Among smokers, three presented the highest reduction in DNA damage after treatment with CM-G. There was no...
